Lakes and Ponds
For over 40 years, I (Robert Nye, proprietor) have been building water-retaining features! Admittedly, the early attempts were with sticks and mud enthusiastically placed by hand across streams in local woodlands at weekends and school holidays!
Later in life, I worked on the ecology and maintenance of drainage dykes on the marshes near Rye in East Sussex and over the ensuing years have been involved in many projects. Water features of all sizes have been something of a passion for most of my life.
When required, I am never more pleased than when helping someone to create a water feature be it a large commercial lake or small garden pond. There are few things in the natural world more appealing, satisfying or relaxing than your own piece of water!
Example Lake and Pond Projects
- After removal of scrub woodland and a few mature oaks, this pond was built using a butyl liner to ensure water retention.

- An irrigation reservoir, a wildlife pond and fishing lake all in one! Constructed in 1991 at the bottom of a field with no water course, this lake relies only on surface run off!

- This large pond was originally constructed by hand in the middle ages and had served a small water mill for over 200 years. It had fallen into disrepair being almost totally full with silt. Today, there is no mill but the pond is back to it former glory with plenty of water, even in the drought years, and full of fish!

- This lake was made from a natural woodland basin. The water level never drops more than approx. 20cm. The lake has a spring feed in addition to run off from surrounding fields. The location and viability of the spring were originally determined by the use of a water diviner! For about 10 years, this lake was stocked with Rainbow Trout so we can conclude the water quality was good.
